The most expensive football (soccer) defender in terms of a
single transfer fee paid is David Luiz who was signed by Paris Saint-German
from Chelsea for a reported £50 million ($85.4 million) in June 2014. Tis is
impressive because usually defenders don't cost a lot.
Gareth Bale became the world's most expensive soccer player
when his protracted transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid was
completed for a reported £85.30 million (€99.95 million; $132.16 million) on 1
September 2013. The fee for the Welsh winger, who agreed a six-year deal worth
£300,000 (€351,539; $464,814) per week, eclipses the £80 million (€94.07
million; $132.52 million) Real Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano
Ronaldo (Portugal) on 1 July 2009.
